Indian Scientists Continue to Lead Global Research in Chemistry, Physics and Materials Science

Ten Indian Researchers Are Recognised As Global Leaders In Research In Their Respective Fields According To Thomson Reuters Analysis  

NEW DELHI, INDIA, September 12, 2012 – India’s continuing influence on global scientific research was today recognised by the Intellectual Property & Science business of Thomson Reuters. Ten of India’s leading researchers were honoured during the “Thomson Reuters Research Excellence – India Citation Awards 2012” presentation event held at the Park Hotel in New Delhi. The 10 award recipients were selected based on citation impact analysis conducted by Thomson Reuters.

The award recipients (in alphabetical order) represent diverse fields spanning chemistry, physics, materials science and nanotechnology. They are:

· Dr. Anunay Samanta, (Physical Chemistry and Photochemistry) - J. C. Bose National Fellow and Professor of Chemistry, University of Hyderabad, Hyderabad
· Dr. Murali Sastry (Nanobiotechnology) –  Director,  India Innovation Center of  DSM India Private Limited, Gurgaon
· Professor Rabin Banerjee (Theoretical Physics and Cosmology) – Senior Professor, Department of Theoretical Sciences, S N Bose National Centre for Basic Sciences, Kolkata
· Professor Sandip P Trivedi (Theoretical Physics and Cosmology) – Professor, Department of Theoretical Physics,  Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Mumbai
· Dr. Sarit Kumar Das (Mechanical Engineering, Heat Transfer, Fluid Dynamics and Nanotechnology) – Professor, Department of Mechanical Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology, Madras
· Professor Thanu Padmanabhan (Theoretical Physics and Cosmology) – Research Scientist, Core Academic Programmes, Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA), Pune
· Professor Umesh Vasudeo Waghmare (Applied Physics and Materials Science, Computational Methods) – Professor, Theoretical Science Unit, Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research (JNCASR), Bangalore
· Dr.  Varun Sahni (Theoretical Physics and Cosmology) – Professor, Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA), Pune
· Professor Velayutham Murugesan (Physical, Organic, and Environmental Chemistry) – Professor of Chemistry (Eminence) & Advisor, Centre of Research, Department of Chemistry, Anna University, Chennai
· Dr.  Vinod Kumar Garg (Chemistry, Environmental Sciences, and Bioresource Technology) – Associate Professor, Department of Environmental Science and Engineering, Guru Jambheshwar University of Science and Technology, Hisar

The Guest-of-Honour was Dr Thirumalachari. Ramasami, Secretary to the Government of India, Department of Science & Technology. The Guest Speaker was Professor Gautam R Desiraju, Structural Chemist, Indian Institute of Science, who has played a major role in the development and growth of the subject of crystal engineering. Professor Gautam was also a Thomson Reuters Award recipient in 2006. His topic for the evening was citations in research evaluation. The award ceremony was attended by more than 150 of the awardees’ industry peers from leading research institutions and libraries, companies and members of the government and policy institutions in India.

The five Thomson Scientific Citation Laureate Award 2006 recipients from India were Professor Kalyanmoy Deb, Indian Institute of Technology, Uttar Pradesh (Computer Science); Professor Gautam R Desiraju, Indian Institute of Science  (Chemistry); Professor Ashok Pandey, Biotech Research Society of India, Kerala, (Biology & Biochemistry); Professor Chintamani Nagesa Ramachandra Rao, Jawaharlal Nehru Centre of Advance Scientific Research, Karanataka (Materials Science); and Professor Ashoke Sen, Harish Chandra Research Institute, Uttar Pradesh (Physics).
